Essential September Facebook Updates Every Hotelier Needs To Know
As summer draws to a close, the sunset is setting on a range of Facebook features, don’t worry though because there is a shining new light on some as well.
It seems this month Facebook has been working hard and come up with quite a few changes, Hotel Marketing people need to be aware of:
Some of these features have been fully launched, and others are still in the test phase.
Let’s go over the 7 Facebook changes we’ve found:
1 – Say goodbye to some old Facebook post types that are rarely used. Remember that ‘boost’ button you see on posts?
Well, you won’t be seeing that so often anymore, because Facebook has looked at the data and will now only allow on posts it feels will have a good response or audience engagement.
Boosts will no longer be available on:
❌ Check-ins on a map, at a restaurant, or in a city – This may also effect check-ins at your hotel
❌ Place recommendations
❌ File uploads or shares
❌ Posts related to attending an event – If you hold regular conferences in the hotel this may affect you
❌ Political endorsements
There are few more, I’ve just highlighted some of them for you.
2 – Branded content marketers are getting new controls and capabilities
If your Hotel is using trusted influences or content creators, Facebook is now providing 2 new features.
- You can now boost the post directly if the creator gives permission.
- Using branded content tag, you can control where you appear
3 – Your hotel in-stream video ad can be seen in more places
Facebook has now given you the ability to show in-stream video ads on the audience network, rather than just on Facebook.
This allows you to target your hotel facebook ads even more and get increased brand exposure.
4 – Your Facebook page picture profile is going to be round
They started this in August and you might have already been affected.
Facebook said ““We’re always working to make Facebook a more engaging place, and we hope this change leads to more conversations with the people you want to reach. We’ve been testing design updates in News Feed and have seen encouraging results and feedback from this design update.”
5 – Instagram Stories are being shown on Facebook
Currently in the testing stage this one. Stories are a bit like what Snapchat invented, users, take pictures of their day, and it creates a little slideshow at the top.
Accommodation Providers, Hotel and B&B owners can actually benefit from this feature by sharing a ‘day in the life’ of the Accommodation. Very simply producing a mini-documentary series.
If you start using this hotel marketing idea, it can take a lot of time to run on two different platforms. Well, if Facebook testing proves a success you won’t need to!
Remember back in 2012 Facebook bought Instagram.
6 – New chat feature being tested by Facebook in WhatsApp
Here is a great one for Hotel Owners who want to get ahead with their marketing! Currently being tested is a new feature where businesses can talk directly with customers (aka guests!) on WhatsApp.
If you have been reviewed and approved to use the service a green check mark will appear next to your name.
The service is CURRENTLY free to use at the time of writing this article.
Important to note is that Chief Operating Officer Matt Idema said: “We do intend on charging businesses in the future.”
7 – Death to the Facebook Power Editor
Facebook has combined the power editor and ads manager to make all our lives a lot easier.
Alongside this change comes an improved workflow when creating campaigns.
Facebook has given you the added function of reviewing and confirming every change you make in an ad. This will give you absolute confidence that the ad is what you expect it to be.
